Apex Learning Solutions had just won the biggest contract in their company's history: a Fortune 500 financial services firm needed 12 compliance training courses covering topics from anti-money laundering to data privacy regulations. The catch? The client needed all 12 courses delivered within 8 weeks to meet a regulatory deadline. Apex's team of three could produce about 2 courses per month. They faced the real possibility of losing a multi-million-dollar, multi-year contract before it even started. The courses also needed to be engaging — the client explicitly stated they did not want traditional click-through compliance training. They wanted gamified, scenario-based learning that employees would actually complete.
Our Solution
We mobilized a dedicated team of four (two instructional designers, one visual designer, and one developer) within 48 hours of the kickoff call. We worked with Apex's compliance SMEs to structure the content into modular, scenario-driven lessons. Each course featured realistic workplace scenarios where learners made decisions and saw consequences — turning dry compliance content into engaging, story-driven experiences. We integrated gamification throughout: learners earned compliance badges, tracked their progress through a visual journey map, and competed on team leaderboards. All 12 courses were built to SCORM 2004 standards with full xAPI tracking for detailed analytics. We delivered courses on a rolling 2-week cadence, allowing the client to begin deploying while we continued production.
The Results
All 12 courses were delivered within the 8-week window, on budget and exceeding quality expectations. The Fortune 500 client deployed the courses to 15,000 employees across 6 countries. First-quarter completion rates hit 94% — compared to the 67% average they had seen with their previous vendor's traditional courses. The client renewed for a second year and expanded the contract to include 20 additional courses. Apex credited the Ewaffle partnership as the key factor in winning and retaining the account, which became their largest client representing 35% of annual revenue.
