The Challenge
NovaTech Training specializes in technology skills training for IT departments and software companies. They had built a catalog of 40+ courses covering topics from cloud computing to cybersecurity, but they were facing a growing problem: completion rates averaged just 45%. Their clients — corporate L&D departments — were starting to question the ROI. Exit surveys revealed that learners found the courses visually outdated, overly text-heavy, and lacking in interactivity. NovaTech knew they needed to modernize their top 10 highest-enrollment courses, but a full redesign seemed like a massive undertaking that would take their team off new development for months.
Our Solution
We proposed a phased redesign approach, tackling the 10 courses in batches of 3-4 over a 12-week engagement. For each course, we performed a content audit to identify what was working and what needed reimagining. We kept the core content intact but completely transformed the delivery experience. Every course received a modern visual redesign with clean layouts, custom illustrations, and micro-animations. We replaced passive text-heavy slides with interactive scenarios — drag-and-drop activities, simulated command-line exercises, branching decision trees, and real-world troubleshooting challenges. We layered in a complete gamification system: learners earned skill badges, unlocked advanced modules, tracked progress through a tech-themed visual dashboard, and received performance scores that mapped to real competency frameworks. The courses were rebuilt in responsive HTML5 with SCORM 2004 and xAPI dual output.
The Results
Within the first quarter after launch, average completion rates across the redesigned courses rose from 45% to 82%. Learner satisfaction scores jumped from 3.2 to 4.7 out of 5. Time-on-task increased by 40%, indicating learners were more deeply engaged rather than skimming through. Three of NovaTech's enterprise clients renewed contracts specifically citing the improved course quality. NovaTech subsequently contracted Ewaffle to redesign an additional 15 courses and to co-develop new courses with gamification built in from the start.
“After adding Ewaffle's gamification to our technology courses, completion rates jumped from 45% to 82%. Our learners actually look forward to training now. The ROI conversation with clients became effortless.”
